These are the plans for Vincent Callebaut Architects‘ City of Science, or Città della Scienza, in Rome, Italy. The architects’ aim is to transform the military district into a totally self-sufficient urban ecosystem and to become a new example of modern, sustainable urbanisation. Inspired by Land Art, the area has been considered as a work of art in itself as well as as a liveable place. Building facades are covered in edible plants, and there’s a great focus on the natural elements of the area including trees and aromatic gardens. The space includes stores, bars and restaurants, pathways, and residential spaces as well as large social spaces and underground parking by housing areas. The entire area is pedestrian, to further encourage environmentally-friendly behaviour.
