Colonia, the product made from rosin and melamine sponge and designed by Yosuke Matsushita, is a series of unique trinket boxes boasting a textured glass-like surface.
To form each colorful cartridge Matsushita adds paint to melted resin and then places a piece of melamine sponge in the liquid. He then turns the sponge until the outermost part is soaked in the liquid whilst making sure to leave one side untreated.
Matsushita then gently presses the sponge to release some of the resin before leaving it to rest and eventually solidify. Finally, he removes the part of the sponge left untouched by the resin, leaving a solid casing.
Rosin is used for long time in many fields with melamine sponge that is modern material. Those materials have certain properties, which is that rosin are melted at and become solid when it is cooled and melamine sponge have high absorbability and workability. Following those properties, Yosuke chose the making process as dipping that is unusual to make things in mass- production.
It makes interesting texture and unintentional color by dipping the sponge to melted rosin. It has slight scent of pine and conformable tone like glass contained air. There are no need to prepare mold to make due to the fact that what you have to do is only dipping. Additionally, it is able to make a shape contained natural beautiful curve made by tied sponge. This product contains both details that is controlled by people and by natural phenomenon.
This product do not need any particular environment and special skills to make. It means every people can be a creator.
“I have been believing that making is full of pleasure and surprise. I hope that this product brings to people the valuable experience of making thing. I am looking forward to this product become trigger to explode our imagination for every generation.” Yosuke tells in his description. “It is no consistent in quality like general mass-produced products. In spite of this, it has verity and each one has character which is that we barely to see any mundane products nowadays.”
Our life style has been changing rapidly because of advancing of technology and our demands has been changing as well. I think that things with originality are difficult to produce because of the modern situation.
He also wants draw attention to the homogenised state of the industry. “We are surrounded by many colorless things made from mass-production”, he explains. “This product has possibility to make our life more colorful through actual making experience and feeling of the texture, scent and tone to enhance our perception. In my opinion, we are surrounded by many colorless things made from mass-production. Those are inextricable for our life due to the fact that our life are definitely based on those products and that mind has been pervasive obviously. I hope that this product to make our life more colorful through actual making experience and feeling of the texture, scent and tone.”
