Chefjet Pro | The Sugar Lab

At the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, 3D Systems showcased the world’s first 3D food printers. Called Chefjet and Chefjet Pro, the innovative machines are capable of producing an amazing array of delicious goodies in 3D geometric form.

The countertop-sized printers come with flavored materials including chocolate, vanilla, mint, sour apple, cherry, and watermelon. They were created with the professional baker in mind, and are perfect for making both monochromatic (Chefjet) or full-color (Chefjet Pro) edible candies and cake toppers.

When speaking about the products, Liz von Hasseln, 3D Systems’ Creative Director Food Products explains, “The machine uses an ink jet print head that’s just like the one you would find in your desktop 2D printer. It spreads a very fine layer of sugar then paints water onto the surface of the sugar, and that water allows the sugar to recrystalize and harden to form these complex geometries.” With a variety of exciting shapes and colors, the fun little treats will add a little flair to any kitchen. Available in the second half of 2014, the Chefjet 3D will average a little less than $5,000 while the Chefjet Pro will average a little less than $10,000.
