The 5,000 Poppies Project

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing, a group of Australian knitting, sewing, and crochet enthusiasts have been working for literally years to create an installation named The 5,000 Poppies Project for Anzac Day. In reality, the group has managed to create over 100,000 poppies instead of the 5,000 originally planned. The sea of poppies (from a distance, rather similar to Paul Cummins’ project in London)is on display at Fed Square Melbourne and is a mark of respect and remembrance for all of Australia’s servicemen and women created in collaboration with landscape designer Phillip Johnson. After Anzac Day, the group behind the project hopes to take it on tour around Australia. Find out more about this project here.
