The red one is glossy, with a silver buckle that looks borrowed from a ski boot. The silver one is roomy enough to start an argument about whether it still counts as a handbag. Neither began life as fashion. Both were cut from tarpaulins that spent years strapped over cargo on European motorways, and they still carry the evidence.

They belong to Reference, a four-piece collection Freitag launched on 8 October, designed in-house by Anne Bachmann. The material is the same one the Zurich brand has been cutting since 1993, when Markus and Daniel Freitag stitched their first messenger bag out of a used truck tarp. We have written about Freitag more times than we care to count, and we still haven’t got bored of it.

Scratches on the spec sheet
What changes this time is the posture. The early Freitags were built for bike couriers and rain; Reference is cleaner and quieter. All four bags share the same trapezoid silhouette, a shape that manages to look light and architectural at once. The core colours are white, silver, red and blue, with a limited run in black.
Then the material does its own thing. Tarps age differently depending on where they have been, so Freitag’s Zurich team hand-picks them from suppliers across Europe, and for this collection Bachmann asked them to choose the marks as carefully as the colours: weathering, road grime, the odd scrape from a low-hanging branch. In most fashion houses that list would be a defect report. Here it is the spec sheet.

The hardware is new. Each bag gets its own label and a magnetic clasp, an idea Bachmann found on a hook mechanism holding up heavy-duty shelving in the Zurich factory. She calls the method “opportunistic wandering”, which is a lovely name for what most designers simply call staring at things.

Built to be worn out
Every bag ships with a detachable repair kit cut from its own tarp, so a tear can be patched with the original material instead of a near match. The thinking behind it is pure Freitag, and Bachmann puts it in four words: “Emotional attachment prevents waste.”
Expensive bags usually ask you to protect them. This one expects you to wear it out, and hands you the spare parts.
