A child smiles into the camera, a common image from advertising, the media, and family albums. To be a child means to be carefree and happy. One rarely comes across angry, skeptical, thoughtful or deeply sad children’s faces, seemingly taboo.
Yet these moments are an integral part of childhood. In these moments, children show strong emotions in a much more pure and genuine manner than adults are capable of. Alexandra’s aim was to show the diversity of children s’ experiences and make the viewer aware of children as individual characters. These children touch us by expressing feeling that all of us carry inside, but as adults, usually keep well hidden. In this way, these portraits confront us with our own vulnerability.
