lex Guofeng Cao Biography – Alex Guofeng Cao came to New York searching for his pursuit, came upon photography, which easily became his passion. Inspired by such masters as Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Edward Weston, and Robert Mapplethorpe, Cao ceaselessly studied and experimented with all methods and techniques in photography. While adept with color, Cao’s preferred medium is the black and white image. Cao’s deep fascination with the subtle gradations of tone between the deep black and the stark white are the generators for all the colors he needs to create his world.
The most recent body of work by Cao is a series of images of popular culture icons. At a glance almost anyone can identify some if not all of the characters in the menagerie of stars. But, upon closer inspection, one can see that these stars are composed of a constellation of tiny repetitive images each slightly differing from its neighbors. The arrays of minuscule visages that compose and conspire to form the larger portraits are iconic images themselves. The plot thickens as one realizes that there is a play, a dialogue between the chosen characters that inhabit each other.

Alex Guofeng Cao è venuto a New York per perseguire la sua carriera, imbattutosi nella fotografia essa è diventata facilmente la sua passione. Ispirato da maestri come Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Edward Weston e Robert Mapplethorpe, Cao ha studiato incessantemente ed ha sperimentato ogni metodo e tecnica possibile nella fotografia. All’abilità del colore, il mezzo preferito del Cao è l’immagine bianca e nera. Il fascino profondo con le gradazioni elusive di tono di Cao tra il denso nero ed il rigido bianco diventano i generatori per tutti i colori dei quali ha bisogno per ricreare il suo mondo.
Il lavoro più recente di Cao è una serie di immagini di icone della cultura pop. Al primo sguardo quasi nessuno può identificare alcuni se non tutti i caratteri nel serraglio di Star. Ma, ispezionando più da vicino, si potrà notare che queste stelle sono composte da una costellazione di piccole immagini ripetitive e che differiscono leggermente ognuna dall’altra. Gli schieramenti di volti minuscoli che compongono e cospirano contro l’opera diventano a loro volta ritratti più grandi ed immagini iconiche di loro stessi. Il complotto s’infittisce quando l’osservatore realizza l’inganno e cioè un dialogo tra i diversi caratteri scelti che si occupano a vicenda.
