The idea of Hövding the business from Sweden of developing a new type of cycle helmet was a response to the introduction of a law on mandatory helmet use for children up to the age of 15. The project resulted in the concept of an airbag helmet, which won Innovationsbron’s Ideas Grant. This kick-started the process of developing Hövding into a real product. The Hövding is an unobtrusive collar that the cyclist wears around his or her neck. The collar contains a folded airbag that only becomes visible when it is involved in an accident. The airbag is designed as a hood that envelops and protects the cyclist’s head. The trigger mechanism is controlled using sensors that register any abnormal movements by the cyclist.
