Last night, a new cycle path opened in Eindhoven, Netherlands. But this is not just any old bike path.
Designed by Daan Roosegaarde and constructed by Heijmans, the Van Gogh-Roosegard cycle path forms part of the Van Gogh cycle route in the province of Noord-Brabant. The design of the path is inspired by the painting The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, and is glow in the dark thanks to thousands of special stones which use innovative technology allowing them to charge during hours of light, and emit a glow when darkness falls. The project, which is the first of its kind, combines art with technology and safety, and is based on the Smart Highway concept developed by Heijmans and Studio Roosegaarde.
The path’s opening marks the beginning of a year of celebrations to mark the 125th anniversary of the artist’s death, and is part of the cycle track which links locations relevant to the life of Van Gogh in Brabant.
The path is open to the public starting from today.
