This is the last creation designed by Foster + Partners and Heatherwick Studio, which forms part of a new financial quarter of Shanghai’s waterfront. The Fosun Foundation is the centrepiece of the Bund Finance Center, a new mixed-use complex.
Inspired by traditional Chinese theatres, the three-storey building features a curtain-like facade of bronze tubes, hanged in three layers, creating semi-transparent screens in front of windows and balconies.
This faceade is “a moving veil, which adapts to the changing use of the building, and reveals the stage on the balcony and views towards Pudong” as Foster said, and it also contains a series of exhibition and events halls, including one on the roof.
This is the first major collaboration between Foster + Partners and Heatherwick Studio, both envolved in other many important projects as the construction of the new campus for Apple and the studies for the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town.
