Designed to rotate on a 23.4 degree slanted axis like the globe, DORA CD Player grabs your attention with its clever gimmick design. This could have been another drab rectangular gadget, meant to seduce you with textures and colors, but thankfully it isn’t! The CD loads into the back panel, while the speakers are placed in the front. I love the catchy remote that accompanies this player; spin my world right round, like a record…..

The Design Museum launches its first iPad Collection App featuring 59 objects from the Design Museum’s collection. The App is a free download which explores key moments in design history through the extensive Desig Museum Collection, classic pieces featured include: the Angelpoise lamp, the Dyson vacuum, the Thonet chair mould, the Face magazine, the British telephone box, the Vespa and the Kindle, a recent addition to the Collection.

The App includes video interviews with Deyan Sudjic, Design Museum Director, and Helen Charmen, Design Museum Head of Learning. Stephen Bayley, Design Museum Founding Director has contributed additional commentary. The App enables users to explore each design by material, date, manufacturer, designer and colour.

The Design Museum has showcased and celebrated design innovation for 22 years and this App, supported in part by donations from visitors, is a new way to explore the museum’s collection. With a global digital audience in excess of three million visitors a year including over 500,000 Twitter followers and 150,000 Facebook fans, the museum is offering new ways to engage its global audience with design.

The Design Museum is building its Collection ahead of its move to new premises at the former Commonwealth Institute in West London in 2014. The App will develop in-line with the Collection and build to become a unique design resource.

A fundamental part of Escama Studio is to credit the artists who create each accessory. Each piece comes with a hang tag bearing the signature of the person who made it. The artists work in co-operatives located outside of Brasília, Brazil. The groups offer women and men in the community a means to earn a living wage through handicrafts and provide a setting where friends are made and self-esteem is regained.

Below the short film shows the various steps required to make a ring pull bag: from sourcing recycled aluminum, sorting usable tabs, washing, polishing, trimming and crocheting pop tops into the finished products. This film follows the journey of the bags from Brazil to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

The film was shot by a film crew in Brazil and was directed and edited in London by the award winning team of Tom Atkinson and Luke Dormehl. It aired in the UK in 2009 as part of the Channel 4 ’3 Minute Wonder’ series. The version that you see here was later edited for use in the US.

Remember those boring and painful lessons about polygons and Geometry classes back in school? I don’t. Not sure if it is because I hated them and never paid any attention -or because I was ‘absent’ that day. Luckily, I learned to love them and now I spend days creating mock-ups and using them almost on a daily basis. Why am I talking about Polygons you might ask? Because today I want to share a series of brilliant posters created by James Reid utilizing polygons to recreate some of our most iconic super heroes. Check the series after the jump!

What would you say about charging up your gadgets with a 20 minute of jogging? … Sounds very good!

TGO Green Energy Gym Technology harnesses people power with cardio outdoor gym equipment and then converts it into useable electricity. At the Hull Green Heart, the human-generated electricity is used for lighting the zone at night time, to extend the usage of the facility into the evenings. But there are many more potential uses for the electricity – it can be fed into local buildings or even into the National Grid. It’s green, it’s shiny and it lights up at night. It’s great for your health and it generates electricity. It encourages kids and adults alike to learn about their health, energy generation and energy consumption.

Please contact Georgie Delaney, Creative Director at TGO for more information about this world-first concept.

Recycling without limits…designer Garth Britzman of Lincoln, Nebraska used recycled bottles filled with colored water to create stunning topographical shade canopy for a vehicle. This project reused recycled soda bottles as a canopy under which a small park is created. An intriguing environment is created where one can explore the surface qualities of the bottles at eye level. Additionally, this project sought to stimulate creative alternatives for recycling and reusing materials.

I love how the natural shape of the plastic bottles makes the pooled water look like leaves.

A friend recently posed the question: “Why on earth do we still receive free phone books anymore? Have the phone book people not heard of the Internet!” Though I agree with her statement, artist Carlos Zuniga certainly does not! The artist relies on these trusty printed books to produce his work, a creative interpretation of written text transformed into visual delights. This series Next is a collection of portraits where Zuniga blacks out certain bits of text to form the image in the negative space.

The Chile-based artist’s bio says that, “Through the destruction of textual identities, a new layer of representational information is created” and that the work, “has to be deciphered from between the lines. Like memory, which is composed of isolated moments that weave a more comprehensive whole.”

These magical creations require a strong vision and a bit of planning. Zuniga has the amazing ability to foresee an image in the space and to, line-by-line, transform the text into a strong visual narrative.
