Photographer Maurizio Galimberti is a master of the Polaroid picture. In his Celebrity Works, he develops unique celebrity portraits that feature grid-like arrangements of photographs. These mosaic compositions of famous faces, including George Clooney, Johnny Depp, Benicio del Toro, and Catherine Zeta-Jones are poetic expressions of the artist’s vision, in which he redefines the typical expectation of a photographic portrait.
Galimberti describes the process as making music with photography, “dividing the space into particles and arranging it like sheet music. The more I penetrate it the more I enrich it with my vision.” The repetitive rows of heads, hands, and faces become an organized chaos within the geometric arrangement. Galimberti purposefully places each photograph in order to collectively lead the viewer’s eye to a central point, where the main focus of the subject’s face is featured. Viewers are encouraged to fit the pieces together in their mind, like a completing a visual puzzle, and as a result, Galimberti’s portraits are a unique visual experience for each person who views them.
